The present invention relates to lithographic printing, and more particularly to photolithographic receptors particularly useful in silver salt diffusion transfer systems.
Regarding the seat. Lithographic (lithographic) printing plates typically include a substrate having a hydrophilic coating on the substrate and then an oleophilic or ink-receptive image area formed directly on the hydrophilic surface. Various photosensitive materials can be used to create the image areas, such as diazo resins, silver halide emulsions, cinnamate esters, and the like. One particularly useful system in this case involves the formation of photographic images of silver by diffusion transfer principles well known in the art. This typically involves combining an imagewise exposed silver halide emulsion with a developing agent to reduce the exposed silver halide to silver in the emulsion, and a soluble silver complex salt along with the unexposed silver halide. and a process composition containing a silver halide solvent that can be produced. The imaging dispersion of the silver complex salt is then transferred to a superimposed silver receiving layer where the silver complex salt is reduced to metallic silver to produce a silver transfer image on its surface. Diffusion transfer has been employed in photolithography by using hydrophilic materials as the silver-receiving layer (thereby providing a background for the printing plate). A silver image is then used to create an ink-receptive printing surface on the hydrophilic background. In the above system, the hydrophilic silver-receptive layer of the image-receiving sheet comprises:
Contains silver precipitation nuclei dispersed in a macroscopically continuous solvent or matrix. One particularly useful matrix is colloidal silica, on which silver is imagewise deposited to produce the ink-receptive image areas of the printing plate. This silver image area can then be chemically treated to make it lipophilic, ie, ink receptive. Colloidal silica has been conventionally used for the background or hydrophilic areas of printing plates. This is because silica has the highest hydrophilicity and most organic materials are less hydrophilic than silica and are therefore more easily smudged with ink than those using silica, or are less likely to accept ink into background areas. This is because there is a tendency to produce a certain printing plate. US Pat. No. 3,055,295 discusses the utility of silica in polymers and curing agents for the polymers for making printing plates. U.S. Pat. No. 3,736,872 further improves upon the use of self-curing polymers with silica, and U.S. Pat. No. 3,922,441 discusses the utility of positively charged silica in printing plate construction. .
The specification of Japanese Patent Application No. 50-108804 (JP 51-56303) by Boston et al. discloses a major improvement over the above, in which the effectiveness of various silica particle sizes is discloses that optimal strength and imaging properties can be achieved without the use of other organic polymers in the layer. In the foregoing discussion, attention has typically been focused on the modification of the hydrophilic surface and the adhesion of silver to the surface, and how the hydrophilic silica layer itself is anchored to the supporting substrate or substrate. Little or no attention was paid to this. The present inventor has proposed that by mixing a titanium dioxide material as defined below into an anchor layer, the adhesion of the hydrophilic silica layer to the printing plate substrate is enhanced, so that a structure that has been conventionally discussed. It has been discovered that a dramatic increase in print life can be achieved over the previous one. The present invention has an anchor layer on the top surface of titanium dioxide of rutile crystal structure with an oxide surface treatment of at least about 10% by weight, the main component being an oxide of silicon, and The present invention provides a photolithographic receptor sheet having a hydrophilic surface and comprising a support having a hydrophilic colloidal silica layer on the anchor layer. The use of a titanium dioxide anchor layer as defined above provides excellent adhesion of the silica layer to the anchor layer, extending the printing life of the lithographic plate produced with the receiver sheet. If colloidal silica is used as a hydrophilic layer in a lithographic printing plate structure, the silica solution can of course be coated directly onto a substrate, such as polyester, and dried. However, it is observed that during subsequent conventional processing, most of the silica can be easily removed from the polyester layer since the silica layer adheres only lightly to the polyester membrane. There is therefore a clear need to generate increased adhesion of the hydrophilic silica surface. In US Pat. No. 3,914,125,
An adhesion layer for securing a hydrophilic silica layer to a polyester substrate is disclosed. According to that specification, the adhesive layer is coated onto the substrate from a solution containing a vinyl chloride-acetate resin and a titanium dioxide pigment in a ratio of 2.65 parts by weight of titanium dioxide per part by weight of resin. While such a structure significantly increases the adhesion of the colloidal silica layer overlying the top surface to the substrate, the selection of titanium dioxide pigments significantly increases the adhesion above that disclosed above. It was confirmed that it can be increased. Titanium dioxide pigment is a white, odorless, inert and non-toxic powder that is insoluble in most solvents except concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated hydrofluoric acid. There are two industrially important crystal forms of titanium dioxide:
They are anatase type and rutile type. Most modern titanium dioxide pigments are composed of a rutile crystal base, coated with a layer of hydrous oxide. Typical examples of such oxides are aluminum, silica, and titanium. The coating or surface treatment layer on the crystalline titanium dioxide particles described above is deposited from a solution of a compound such as sodium silicate, which can be added to the aqueous dispersion of the pigment base by neutralization. The coating or surface treatment layer is usually a mixture of two or more oxides (hydroxides), typically alumina, silica, and titania. Since the pigment rarely experiences temperatures above 160°C during post-treatment of the coating, the coating or surface treatment layer on the pigment is well hydrated and its nature is crystalline rather than crystalline. It is amorphous. The above coating typically has a thickness of 40 to
It is 50 angstroms thick and transparent. Particularly useful titanium dioxide in the present invention is of the rutile crystal type having a surface treatment layer containing silicon oxide as a major component, at least about 10%, preferably at least about 15%, by weight of the particles. The following table shows various silicas along with their surface oxide treatment layer and the adhesion relationship thereto of a hydrophilic layer of colloidal silica superimposed thereon.

It turns out that it is necessary. In the formation of silica gel, the fundamental step that takes place is the collision of two silica particles, the contact being required to form siloxane bonds that typically fix both particles irreversibly to each other. It is assumed that. Without wishing to be limited by theory, it is believed that the increased print life observed for silicon oxide treated titanium dioxide pigments is due to the formation of siloxane bonds as described above. However, such bonding seems unlikely or improbable for surface treatments with aluminum, zinc or titania. The invention is illustrated in further detail by the following non-limiting examples. Parts in the examples are parts by weight unless otherwise specified. Example 1 One side of a 4 mil (100 micron) thick polyethylene terephthalate film was coated with American cyanamide dispersed with Union Carbide Vinylite VAGH vinyl chloride-acetate resin. Unitan OR572 (claimed to contain 83% Tio 2 together with A 2 O 3 and Sio 2 ) pigment (A 2 O 3 and

were coated from a methyl ethyl ketone solution containing 3 parts by weight of OR572 per part by weight of resin and then dried at a temperature of 200° to a dry coating weight of 1.2 grams per square foot. The thus coated sheet was treated to enhance the hydrophilicity or wettability of its surface by passing the film through a corona discharge. The sheet was then coated with hydrophilic silica having the following composition: Nyacol 2040 colloidal silica 317g Nalco 1115 colloidal silica 23g Merck Silver Protein Mild (10% solids in water) 20ml The layers were coated to give a dry coating weight of 0.5 grams per square foot. After curing the above coated sheet for several days at room temperature, a chloride/bromide ratio of 2:1 was obtained.
and a high contrast chlorobromide photographic emulsion having a gelatin/silver ratio of 1.2:1 is coated on the hydrophilic silica layer per square foot.
The silver coating weight was 2.0 grams. A 10 inch by 15 inch sheet of the above material was exposed in a conventional manner in a camera equipped with a reversal prism, with the following composition: Deionized water 1000 milliliters Sodium sulfite 80 grams Hydroquinone 35 grams Thiosulfate Photographically developed in a conventional diffusion transfer developer with 15 grams of sodium, 28.5 grams of sodium hydroxide, 2.5 grams of potassium bromide, and 25 milliliters of 0.5% benzotriazole in water. After rinsing off the emulsion with warm water, a positive, ie, a right-reading copy of the original, was obtained on the sheet material. The sheet was then immersed for 25 seconds at room temperature in a solution of the following composition : potassium ferricyanide 33.0 grams sodium chloride 17.5 grams 2-benzyl-2-imidazoline hydrogen chloride 10 grams deionized water 1 liter of solution. . This renders the silver image areas lithographically functional or ink receptive. After the sheet material was rinsed with water for 10 seconds and dried, the sheet was loaded into an "ATF Chief" 15 printing machine with conventional inks and fountain solution. Over 30,000 good quality copies were produced without any defects in image quality. Hydrophilic silica coatings were made using a mixture of two different sized colloidal silicas, as taught by Boston et al. in JP-A-51-56303. The majority of commercially available silica sols are characterized as consisting of discrete spherical particles within a sufficiently narrow particle size range distribution. At least one commercially available sol, Nyacol 2040 from Nalco Chemical, actually has an irregular shape when viewed under a high-magnification electron microscope and dries in a synchronized manner. This shows that it consists of particles that appear to be Irregularly shaped silica particles are believed to yield printing plates with increased print life. As foreseen in the examples above, a large number of copies must be made before failure of the printing plate is observed, therefore the two examples below simply employed conditions that illustrate comparative printing longevity. . That is, the embodiment is designed to facilitate plate destruction. To accomplish this goal, the silica coating is relatively thin, e.g., about 80 milligrams per square foot, and is used in overpacked presses, increasing pressure and thereby increasing plate wear. for,

ものとほぼ等しかつた。Table: As illustrated in the table above, poor print life is obtained when coating a thin silica layer (approximately 100 mg per square foot) on the anchor layer.
This is not surprising. This is because the anchor coating is not flat, but rather has hills and valleys visible under high magnification. However, the silica layer is flat. Therefore, it is thick in some areas and very thin in other areas, so that it easily wears away or wears away in the very thin areas. A very thick layer of silica (approx.
Similarly poor print life is obtained with coatings (600 mg or more). This is because the silica layer dries into a mud cracked form and the silica pillars revert to powder form, which is easily removed even by hand rubbing across the layer. This is because it will be done. In contrast to these conditions, coating weights of about 200 to 500 mg per square foot form a dense, hard, cohesive hydrophilic layer, and the colloidal silica sol and surface-treated titanium dioxide pigment It is in this region that the main differences between the interactions are observed. As explained in the last example above, the surface silica is
By using non-spherical silica with 100% titanium dioxide, obtained when using conventional spherical silica (even if it is used with pigments containing some silica on the surface) Up to three times longer print life is observed. This discovery led to the production of printing plates that were as economical to produce as conventional printing plates, but extremely durable and capable of producing tens of thousands of high-quality printed copies. To get
A printing plate is obtained which has another advantage. Furthermore, there is no significant change in the silica used in the hydrophilic layer. That is, the appearance and image quality are not affected. Example 5 One of the disadvantages of the white plate (obtained when only titanium dioxide is used in the anchor layer) is that when the photographic emulsion is coated and the image is formed, light scattering is severe and the resolution of the photographic image is reduced. This results in a decrease in A simple way to improve resolution without increasing plate complexity is to incorporate dye or carbon black into the anchor layer.
Example 1 was repeated in all respects except that 1 gram of Sterling R carbon black was added per 90 grams of titanium dioxide pigment to the titanium dioxide pigment before milling. A black image on a gray background resulted when the coating was applied and then the plate was manufactured. The gray background has a reflective optical density of 0.52 and a reflective optical density of 0.10.
compared to a white background with The end result was a halation-resistant background, which required 40% more exposure time than the white version, but significantly increased image resolution. Example 6 Example 5 above was repeated, substituting a red dye (soluble in methyl ethyl ketone but insoluble in water) for carbon black to produce a plate with a black image on a pink background. The dye used was
Celliton Fast Pink RF-HT, manufactured by GAF Corporation, was insoluble in water and any colorant emulsion absorbing the desired light (blue and green) was made photosensitive. Dyes could be used. Although the exposure time required in this case was approximately twice that of the white plate, the resolution was approximately equal to that found for the gray base.
