Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain toner density always constant irrespective of deterioration of electrostatic chargeability characteristics of a photosensitive body by changing the standard level for controlling the toner density in accordance with surface potential value. CONSTITUTION:Voltage value proportional to the surface potential is fed as sensor output information 10 from a surface potential sensor 3 installed on a photosensitive drum, and this information 10 is divided in voltage with resistors 12-14 in accordance with the voltage value, and fed to the positive phase of a comparator 15. This value is a standard level for judging an amt. of toner, and the values of the resistors 12-14 are set so as to control the value of the information 10 to a value predetermined by estimation and discussion made in advance in accordance with the information 10. On the other hand, output information 11 from a reflection type sensor 9 is fed to the reverse phase of the comparator 15 to compare it with the standard level. As a result, the comparator 15 decides an amt. of toner, and provides the output value 16 to a control unit, or directly actuates a toner replenishing mechanism through relays, etc., to control the toner density.

If the charging characteristics of the photoreceptor drum deteriorates due to repeated recording, the charging conditions of the developing process will be different.
Affects the amount of toner developed on the photoreceptor drum surface,
This has the disadvantage that it provides information different from the actual toner concentration in the developing device, and toner concentration control does not operate normally.

Based on information from a reflective sensor (using light, ultrasonic waves, etc.) 9 that reads the amount of toner that has been exposed and developed on areas that are not transferred to paper, the amount of toner in the developing device 5 is estimated and an arbitrarily set standard is set. The toner density is controlled by supplying or not supplying toner from the toner box 6 into the developing device 5 based on whether it is more or less than the level. A reference level for determining whether or not toner is to be replenished is varied in accordance with surface potential information l detected by a surface potential sensor 3 provided after the charger 2, and the toner concentration is accurately controlled to a constant value.

A voltage value proportional to the surface potential is input as sensor output information 10 from a surface potential sensor on the photoreceptor drum. Sensor output information is transmitted through resistors 12 and 13.1 depending on the voltage value.
The voltage is divided from 4 and inputted into the positive phase input of the comparator 15. This value is a reference level for determining the amount of toner, and the values of the resistors 12, 13 and 14 are set so as to be a value determined in advance through evaluation study according to the value of the sensor output information IO. On the other hand, the output information 11 from the reflective sensor is input to the negative phase input of the comparator 15 and compared with the reference level. As a result, the comparator 15 determines the amount of toner and transmits the output value 16 to a control board (not shown), or directly operates a toner replenishing mechanism using a relay or the like to control toner concentration.

(Effects of the Invention) As described above, the present invention constantly maintains the toner density by changing the reference level for toner density control according to the value of the surface potential, regardless of the deterioration of the charging characteristics of the photoreceptor. This brings about this effect.
