Abstract

PURPOSE:To open and close each pair of suction valves and exhaust valves according to engine conditions, by connecting cam shafts for driving the suction valve and the exhaust valve for high speeds through centrifugal clutches to each cam shaft for low speeds. CONSTITUTION:Two suction valves and two exhaust valves are provided in each cylinder, and each of the valves is opened and closed by suction cams 4 and exhaust cams 5 interlocked with a crank shaft. There are provided centrifugal clutches 6 and 7 between the two suction cams 4 and between the two exhaust cams 5, respectively. The centrifugal clutches 6 and 7 included each two cones 10 biased by springs 9 in such a manner as to be separated from each other. When an engine is operated at high speeds, balls 8 are outwardly moved by a centrifugal force. As a result, the cones 10 act to engage meshing dogs 11 with each other.
