Abstract

PURPOSE:To adsorb and desorb a polycyclic organic substance selectively using animal fiber. CONSTITUTION:A polycyclic org. substance, particularly, a mutagenic substance, comprising 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido-[4,3-b]indole, etc. is adsorbed and desorbed using animal fiber such as wool, silk, etc. The adsorption of said polycyclic org. substance to animal fiber is carried out by adding the animal fiber to a soln., particularly, aq. soln. contg. said polycyclic org. substance, and stirring or shaking at, usually, 0-100 deg.C, etc. To desorb the polycyclic org. substance adsorbed to the animal fiber, a solvent such as methanol, etc. is used, and the mixture is stirred or shaken at the boiling point of the solvent, etc.

To desorb polycyclic organic substances adsorbed to animal fibers, use a neutral, weakly alkaline, or weakly acidic solvent such as methanol, methanol-ammonia aqueous solution, methanol-hydrochloric acid solution, etc. This can be carried out by stirring and shaking at the following temperatures. Also,
When a column is filled with animal fibers and a solution containing a polycyclic organic substance is passed through the column, the column can be eluted by passing through the above-mentioned solvent.

According to the method of the present invention, polycyclic organic substances can be selectively adsorbed onto animal fR fibers. It is particularly effective for polycyclic organic substances having three or more rings. The method of the present invention is particularly useful for selective adsorption, desorption and concentration of polycyclic organic substances, such as mutagenic substances, that exist in trace amounts in the environment, foods, luxury goods, biological samples, etc. It can be widely used for qualitative, quantitative determination, or removal of primary substances. For example, it can be used to quantify mutagens in river water, remove mutagens from heaf extracts, quantify mutagens in urine, and remove mutagens from cigarette smoke.
