Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the life of a battery rapidly by driving a display element while light is sensed with an element functionable as light sensor such as solar cell, phototransistor and photodiode. CONSTITUTION:An oscillation signal from an oscillation circuit 5 is divided with a frequency dividing circuit 6 to form a pulse signal of 1Hz and display information on hour, minute and second with counters 7-12. Then, an AND circuits 39-44 are provided between latch circuits 13-18 and decoder circuits 19-24 and while a solar cell 37 generates a voltage below the specified threshold, a judgment is passed with a light sensing circuit 38 so that the circuits following the decoder circuits 19-24 are kept from driving. When it is above the threshold, display information is displayed with display elements 31-36 through drive circuits 25-30. In addition, solar batteries 3 and 4 are arranged near a display lamp and on the top surface of a display panel 2 respectively.

(1) is almost reaching saturation at present. In other words, the circuit section of the digital watch has almost no manufacturing cost, and the current consumption has been significantly reduced compared to the initial model, and it is almost impossible to achieve a further significant reduction in current consumption in the future. The display element has also settled on a liquid crystal display method, which consumes less current, and will not have a significant impact on battery life in the future. Although (2) is the most reliable means of improving battery life, it is completely contrary to the trend toward thinner and smaller watches, and is therefore difficult to adopt on the side. (8) is a means to improve battery life (
This is as reliable as 2). - A specific example is a method that attempts to maintain a large battery capacity by charging a secondary battery built into a watch with electricity obtained from a solar battery (-secondary battery). The above are conventional means for improving battery life, but the present invention aims to significantly improve battery life by using a driving method for a digital watch. The details of the present invention will be explained below.

The oscillation signal from the oscillation circuit 5 is divided by the frequency dividing circuit 6 to create an IHz pulse signal, which is sent to the counter circuit 7.
The obtained information is successively transmitted to the counter circuits 8 to 12 connected in series to create display information of hours, minutes, and seconds. The display information of each counter circuit 7-12 is latch circuit 13-18, decoder circuit 19-24. It is displayed on display elements 51-36 via drive circuits 25-30. The operation of B continues without interruption, and when the battery capacity approaches the end, the battery life is displayed and then it stops. This conventional drive method consumes a lot of wasteful electricity. In conventional digital watches, the display element is driven continuously day and night, but when the user wants to know the time, the display element is driven, and the latch circuit is not driven at other times. In other words, the display element is activated only when the brightness is bright enough for the user to check the time, and the latch circuit is not activated when the user is left in the dark while sleeping or when the device is off-axis while being carried. The aim is to reduce current consumption. As means for controlling the drive of display elements, elements that can function as optical sensors, such as solar cells, phototransistors, and photodiodes, are used. If such a light sensor element is placed near the display lighting lamp, when you want to know the time in a variable manner, you can just turn on the display lighting lamp as before, and the light sensor element will sense this light and display it. The element is driven. As described above, the present invention reduces the electrical energy consumed inadvertently by conventional digital watches, and there is no discernible difference in practical use from conventional digital watches. FIG. 3 shows a basic circuit diagram as an integrated example of the present invention. Latch circuits 13 to 18 and decoder circuits 19 to 2 in the basic circuit diagram of a conventional digital watch
4 have AND circuits 39 to 44 between them, and this circuit has a thick I
l! ! It is controlled by the amount of power generated by the battery 37. That is, when a voltage higher than a certain threshold value is generated, the display element is driven, and when it is lower than that, the circuits after the decoder circuit are not driven. This determination is made by the light sensing circuit 38. Further, the electrical energy obtained by the solar cell 37 acts as a driving source together with a separate battery built into the watch.

As described above, the present invention is a digital watch that drives a display element while sensing light using an element that can function as a light sensor, such as a solar cell, phototransistor, or photodiode, which significantly shortens battery life. It has improved the performance of the watch, and has no practical problems compared to conventional digital watches, and its effects are worthy of praise. As an additional benefit, the useful life of the display element can also be significantly extended, since the display element is not constantly driven.
