Abstract

A process for the manufacture of endless metal bands, suitable as part of a composite metal drive belt. The endless metal bands can be manufactured from plate metal (1) which is welded together edge to edge to obtain a pipe (2) whose length is equal to at least a multiple of the width of the metal bands. Ringshaped parts (4) having substantially the same width as the bands are cutted off from the pipe.

Such a method, known in US Pat. No. 3,922,771, makes it possible to create endless bands that can be used as part of composite metal drive belts.

One problem that arises with the method described in time r1 above is how to obtain a welded seam of 'a' star quality. Very important in this regard is the quality of the raised edge of the infinite hand near the weld. This is because it is there that the initial cracking [1] generally occurs.

This problem can be solved, for example, by removing the side edges from the band, for example by cutting, after the band has been made indefinitely. Such methods are expensive and involve considerable waste of materials.

To this end, according to the invention, strips of sheet metal 1 are wound together, edge to edge, to form a tube whose length is at least equal to a multiple of the width of the metal band! /
The υ shape is welded, and then a ring-shaped part with approximately the same width as the band is cut from the tube. As a result, after the welded seam has been created, an infinite band with machined side edges is produced 4q, which ensures an optimal edge coverage of the infinite band, especially near the welded seam.

It is, however, a known technique to sever an infinite band from a tubular tube, which gives the only possibility of obtaining an infinite band without welded seams. However, making infinite bands from sheet metal is much more preferred because of their tough qualities such as constant thickness and flat surfaces.

After the annular sections are cut, various machining operations can be performed to modify their quality and/or size. In this case, the length of the band is increased by rolling, which also has a beneficial effect on the welded seam.

The drawing shows a strip of sheet metal 1! Only a schematic diagram of how the Iv-shaped weld is made into the tube 2 is shown. As a result, a helical welded seam 3 is created. By cutting the ring-shaped section 4 from the tube 2, an infinite band with a diagonal welded seam 5 on the right 7 is obtained.
