In order to meet the demand for increased recording capacity, recent magnetic heads for detecting and reproducing magnetic recording are increasingly required to get closer to the surface of the recording medium, and the distance between them is less than 0.5 μm for magnetic disks. There is a need to further reduce the thickness to 0.35 μm or less. With such fine spacing, in the conventional burnishing process, the slider edge that cuts the protrusions gently hits the protrusions, resulting in poor cutting efficiency and the inability to sufficiently remove protrusions from the surface of the magnetic medium, resulting in the formation of a magnetic head. This has the drawback of damaging the magnetic core and slider, and in severe cases, causing damage to them and collision with the surface of the magnetic medium, that is, a crash. Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a new burnishing method that eliminates the above-mentioned drawbacks. The purpose of the present invention is to improve the surface finish of magnetic recording media in the burnishing process, which is a manufacturing process of magnetic recording media such as magnetic disks. This can be achieved by performing burnishing while applying vibration to the burnishing head in the direction of head movement. An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.

The space between the magnetic medium 3 and the core slider 1 extends to the core slider floating length 4. The magnetic medium 3 has surface protrusions 5 which are burnished to a desired surface smoothness to prevent the core slider 1 and the core portion 2 from being damaged by the surface protrusions 5.

Regarding the surface protrusion 5 appearing on the surface of the magnetic medium 3 in the figure,
The burnishing head 9 moves gently in the seek direction from right to left in the figure, vibrates in the seek direction or floating direction, and has an effective cutting speed for the tip 8 which is in contact with the burnishing surface at the tip of the surface protrusion 5. collide with.

The vibration frequency (FCHz) of the burnishing head 9 is determined experimentally depending on the relationship between the rotational speed (NCvp) of the magnetic medium and the vibration amplitude (ACmlL).

This vibration frequency is determined in order to shorten the burnishing time, but the optimum frequency is three times the rotational speed.

This is set so as not to reach the resonant frequency of the structure around the burnishing head, and is determined by the number of protrusions per unit area of the magnetic medium 3.

That is, since the repetition period in which the protrusions exist is below this frequency, optimal burnishing can be performed by adding vibrations of this frequency. Furthermore, the vibration amplitude was set at 0.1 mm1 because if the vibration amplitude is less than this, the burnishing speed due to the vibration during burnishing will not improve, and if the frequency is higher than this, the burnishing head will cause unnecessary vibrations. This is because it causes a phenomenon that causes scratches on the magnetic medium.

Although the burnishing time is not absolutely determined depending on the material of the medium and other conditions, the burnishing time can be shortened to less than the time required by the conventional method.
