Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the occurence of trouble due to dust, by a method wherein a drainage ditch is arranged along the outer periphery of the water seal part of U-shape in section and a screw at its bottom part to discharge the dust to the ditch. CONSTITUTION:The gap between a converter 1 and a hood 2 is sealed with a skirt 3 and the outer periphery of skirt 3 is filled with water by providing the water seal part 4 of U-shape in section thereto and it is sealed with a sealing cylinder 6. A drainage ditch 5 is provided along the upper outer periphery of this water seal part 4, a screw 10 having flexibility being provided to its bottom part and the screw 10 is made to raise the dust from the botton part of water seal part 4 to the drainage ditch 5. When dust is settled on the bottom part of water seal part 4, the dust is agitated by the rotation of screw 10; the dust of small specific gravity being, in a floating manner, discharged to the drainage ditch 5 by the overflow water of water seal part 4 and the dust of large specific gravity is transferred with the screw 10 and discharged to the drainage ditch 5.

In the conventional skirt sealing device having such a configuration,
Exhaust gas containing a large amount of dust such as iron powder during refining flows from the gap between the hood 2 and the skirt 3 as shown by the arrow, and the dust that leaks until the skirt 3 comes into close contact with the converter 1 also flows as shown by the arrow. The dust that enters the seal part along with the exhaust gas falls into the water seal part 4, or forms a layer on the inner and outer surfaces of the seal cylinder 6, causing the skirt 3 to rise. When this occurs, the dust is washed away by the sealing water and settles to the bottom of the water sealing part 4, forming a dust deposit 7.

If the layer of dust 7 accumulated in this manner becomes high, the tip of the seal cylinder 6 will protrude into the dust accumulation IK, making it impossible for the skirt 3 to rise. the result,
There was a drawback in that the converter could not be tilted, making it impossible to carry out the pig iron receiving and tapping processes, and the converter operation had to be completely suspended.
