Abstract

PURPOSE:To solve problems of adsorption and dust of a magnetic disk by forming and containing a head disk assembly in a case containing nitrogen or inactive gas in the atmosphere having a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. CONSTITUTION:A nitrogen gas or an inactive gas bomb 4 is connected to a case of a magnetic disk device sealed conventionally through a pipe 5 and a valve 6 and a pressure gage 7 are added to the case and the pipe. A vent 8 and a check valve 9 are provided to one end of the pipe. The check valve 9 is closed after the air in the tank is discharged after the assembling of the head assembly is done. Then, the inactive gas is filled in the tank by observing the pressure gage 7. A pressure sensor 10 is provided separately in the tank and the pressure in the tank is observed normally, allowing to keep the tank pressure into a pressure into a pressure slightly higher (>=10mHg) than the atmospheric pressrure. Thus, no adsorption occurs in a minute gap between the disk and the head because of the change in external conditions. Further, no consideration is required on the invasion of dust at all.

The following advantages can be achieved by slightly pressurizing the inside of the case of the magnetic disk device above atmospheric pressure and filling the atmospheric gas with dry nitrogen gas or inert dry gas.

The biggest advantage is that the small gap between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head does not cause adhesion due to changes in external conditions, such as temperature and humidity.

Therefore, even if the flying height of the magnetic head becomes small, a small gap can be easily formed. In addition, conventionally, there are cases where a moisture absorbent is placed inside a magnetic disk device.
There's no need for that.

By increasing the pressure inside the case of the magnetic disk drive by a small amount (from atmospheric pressure), there is no need to consider the ingress of dirt from the outside. Therefore, when installing a magnetic disk device, the cleanliness of the external environment can be ignored. The parts that make up the magnetic disk device are ultra-precision machined parts and lubricants that are expected to have a long life are used. Therefore, the oxidation of parts and the deterioration of lubricating oil can be significantly reduced by filling with dry nitrogen gas or inert gas, so that the life of the magnetic disk device can be easily extended.

A nitrogen gas or inert gas container 4 is connected to a conventionally sealed case of a magnetic disk device through a pipe 5, and a valve 6 and a pressure gauge 7 are attached to the container and the pipe. An exhaust port 8 and a shutoff valve 9 are provided on one side of this pipe. After assembling the head assembly of the magnetic disk drive, the air in the tank is exhausted, and then the shutoff valve 9 is closed. Then, while watching the pressure gauge 7, fill the tank with inert gas. A separate pressure sensor 10 is installed inside the tank to constantly observe the pressure inside the tank, thereby making it possible to maintain an atmosphere where the pressure in the tank is slightly lower than atmospheric pressure at all times.
