Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively prevent surging on canvas fit to a mast which is vertically secured to a boat by longitudinally placing a pair of flaps at both sides of the canvas body in such a manner as to be rotatable to their axes. CONSTITUTION:A pair of flaps 7 and 7' are longitudinally and rotatably placed at both sides of a canvas body 4a fit to a mast 3 which is vertically secured to a boat hull 2. The flaps 7 and 7' are attached at respective sides to operation rods 8 and 8' which are vertically raised at both sides of rims 6 and 6' and actuating sources 9 and 9' such as motors or torque hinges are mounted at the uppermost points of the operation rods 8 and 8', respectively. If wind comes in the direction A, the flap 7' on the windward side is closed and the other 7 on the leeward is opened. Since the wind is rectified by the rounded side of the flap 7', surging may be prevented.

However, the sail is prone to airflow surging at both ends. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of surging, if both ends of the sail are rounded, there is a problem that effective lift cannot be obtained at the end of the sail on the downstream side.
