A piston is slidably housed in a cylinder to form upper and lower oil chambers, and a shock absorber is provided with expansion and compression damping valves in parallel to the piston. A side groove is formed on the outer periphery of the joint to provide a passage that bypasses the piston, and a rotary valve that increases or decreases the area of this passage is disposed at the bottom of the piston.
