Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 (1)  発明の技術分野 本発明は、インク粒子を噴射して文字や図形などを記録
するインクジェット記録方式に用いられるインクジェッ
ト記録装置に関し、善にドロップオンデ!ンド方式Oイ
ンクジエツジ記録装置に関するものである。
(2)技術の背景 ドロップオンデマンド方式のインクジェット!IJ 7
トヘツド(fリントヘッド)は、インク供給路及びノズ
ルの双方に通じる圧力室を圧電w子によって圧縮してイ
ンク粒子化を行うように#!成されている。圧動素子に
駆動パルスを印加すると圧力室が圧縮され、その圧力で
インクがノズルから噴射して粒子化が行われる。圧電素
子が復元するとインク供給路から圧力室にインクが吸引
されてインク補給が行われる。そして圧電素子に印加す
る駆動パルスの大きさによってインク噴射量つtシ印字
ドツト径を調整し、印字の濃淡表現(階調性)が可能で
ある。しかし、従来のグリントヘッドには彼達するよう
な間mがあり、その対策が要望されている。
(3)従来技術と問題点 従来一般の!リントヘッドにおいては、圧力室とインク
供給路及びノズルとが常に自由導通状態にあり、このた
めプリントヘッド内のインクの流れが一方向的でないと
いう問題がある。すなわち、インク粒子化時には圧力室
のインクがノズル側にだけでなく、インク供給路側へも
流れる。このため粒子化効率が低い。従ってまた、イン
ク噴耐量の調整が容易てなく、良好な階調性の実現を妨
けている。他方、インク補給時にはインクが圧力室にイ
ンク供給路側からだけでなく、ノズル側からも吸引され
る。従うてノズルにおけるインクのメニスカスがノズル
内へ引き込まれることになり、この引1込まれたメニス
カスがインクの表面張力によって再び静止状態に復元す
るまではインク補給が終了せず、次のインク粒子化を行
うことができない。つまクインク補給はインクの表面張
力に依存するので時間がかかり、これがインク粒子化周
波数の向上t−妨げている。
上記の問題の対策として、従来、メカニカル弁や流体ダ
イオードを龜み込んで流れを一方向化するようにしたプ
リントヘッドが提案されている。
しかし、メカニカル弁を用いたプリントヘッド、特にマ
ルチノズルヘッドは大型になるという欠点がある。また
、メカニカル弁−?流体ダイオードは順方向の流れの場
合でも抵抗が増大し、圧電素子の駆動電圧の増大ttね
〈欠点がある。
(4) 発明の目的 本発明は上記現状に鑑み、印字ヘッド内のインクの流れ
の一方向化して高性能を実現し、しかも前記従来提案技
術の欠点管伴わない、つまり構造が簡単且つコンパクト
で実用性にすぐれたドロップオンデマンド方式の印字ヘ
ッドを有するインクジェット記録装置を提供することを
目的とするものである。
(5)発明の構成 本発明は、概°略的には、圧電素子を用いて!す/トヘ
ッド内の流量調整を行って流れの一方向化を実現するも
のである。
すなわち、本発明によるインクジェット記録装置は、イ
ンク供給路及びノズルの双方に通じる圧力室を圧電素子
によりて圧縮してインク粒子化を行うように構成された
印字ヘッドを有するインク路側及びノズル側の位置に流
量−整用圧電素子を設けた構成となし、これらの圧電素
子の流量調整作用によってインク粒子化時の圧力室から
インク供給路側への流れ及びインク補給時のノズル側か
ら圧力室への流れが生じないようにしたものである。
(6)発明の実施例 以下、本発明の実施例を図面を参照してlli!明する
第1図は本発明によゐ印字ヘッドの一実施例の主要部の
概略構成及び作用を示す。図には1つのインク流路上水
してあり、符号1が圧力室管示す。
圧力室1は、導通路zを介しインク供給路(図示せず)
に通じ、且つ導通路3會介しノズル(図示せず)に通じ
ている。
圧力室1と対応する位置には、圧力室を圧縮してインク
粒子化を行うための圧電素子Ps k設けである。そし
て、圧力室10のインク供給路側及びノズル側の各位置
にそれぞれ流量調整用圧電素子P8及びPst設けであ
る。螢述するように、流量調整用圧電素子pm及びI’
sは、駆動時に、それらの部分otit路4及び5會そ
の断面積がゼロまたは近似的にゼロとなるように閉じる
作用をする。
尚、この実施例では流路4及び5t−他の部分より狭く
シ、圧電素子P z e P sの比較的小さなたわみ
によって流路4,5を閉じられるようにしである。
また、この実施例では3つの圧電素子P1* P2* 
PH1−1枚の板状に形成し、その上面側の電極を第1
図(ハ)に符号S1#S!で示す部分で切断した構造と
して各圧電素子を別個に駆動できるようにしである。そ
うすれば複数個の圧電素子上用意する必景がなく、また
取付作業も1回で済むので省コスト及び省工程となる。
次に以上のプリントヘッドの作用についてト明する。ま
ずインク粒子化の場合は、第1図(ロ)に示すように、
はじめに供給路側流量調整用圧電素子P!(以下「供給
路側圧電素子」と略記)が駆動され、供給路側流路4が
閉じられる。その直後、圧力室圧電素子P裏が駆動さね
、これにより矢印ムで示す如く圧力室10からノズル側
へのインクの流れが生じ、粒子化が行われる。このとき
、供給路側流路4が閉じているので圧力室lOからイン
ク供給路働への流れが発生せず、粒子化が効率良く行わ
れる。従ってまた、圧力室圧電素子の駆動・臂ルスの大
きさを変えてインク噴射量を調整することが容易でTo
り、真好な階調性を実現できる。
他方、粒子化後のインク補給O場合は、第1図(ハ)に
示すように、まずノズル側流量調整用圧電素子Pa  
(以下「ノズル側圧電素子」と略記)が駆動されてノズ
ル側II酪5が閉じられる。次いで、供給路側圧電素子
psが復元して供麹路側流路4が開かれ、そのlIK圧
力室圧電素子P1が復元する。
これによ夕矢印1で示す如く供給路側から圧力室10へ
のインクの流れが生じてインク補給が行われる。このと
き、ノズル側流路5が閉じているのでノズル側から圧力
室lOへoすれは発生せず、前述したようなノズルにお
けるメニスカスの引込みがおきない。すなわち、インク
補給を、インクの嵌置張力にたよることなく、圧力室圧
電素子復元時の圧力室内O吸引力によって強制的に行う
ことが可能である。これによりインク補給時間の短縮、
すなわち粒子化周波数の向上が可能である。
インク補給終了後、ノズル側圧電素子Psが復元してノ
ズル側流路5が開かれ、次いで供給路側圧電素子P:が
駆動されて供給路側流路4再び閉じられ、これにより次
の粒子化の準備がなされる。
以上の作用において、圧力室圧電素子P1は印字の時だ
け駆動される。他方、流量調整用圧電素子PI及びps
は印字または非印字Kかかわらず、一定周期で連続的に
駆動される。しかし、印字のときだけ圧力室圧電素子P
1と相前験させて駆動するようにしても良い。
次に、第1図の実施例では流量調整用圧電素子P鵞yP
3を流路4,5の片11(第1図で上側)にだけ設けで
あるが、この場合、圧電素子のたわみに限界かめるので
、前述したように流路4.51それに対応して狭くして
おく必要がある。しかし、流路が狭いとそれだけ流れに
対する抵抗が大きくなり、インク粒子化及びインク補給
の効率が低下する問題がある。
この問題の対策案が第2図に示す実施例であり、流路の
上下両側に流量調整用圧電素子P 、 P’を対向させ
て設けた構成としである。かかる構成によれは圧電素子
p 、 p’が流路中に両側から入シ込んでくるので、
流路鐘断度が大きく、それだけ予め流路断面積音大きく
しておくことができ、上述のような間mastIJする
。尚、圧電素子PtP’の駆動回路は共用できる。また
、圧電素子P t P’のいずれか1枚は第1図の実施
例と同様に圧力室圧電素子(図示せず)と一体化するこ
とができる。
以上は1つの流路についてのみ説明したが、多数のノズ
ルを有するiルチノズルヘッドにおいては各流路につい
て上記のような構成とすれは良い。
その場合、各流路の供給路側流量調整用圧電素子の駆動
回路を共用し、またノズル儒流量調整圧電素子の駆動回
路も共用することができる。尚、ノズルが複数列(例え
ば2列ま九は4列)に配列されている場合は、流量調整
用圧電素子を各列ごとに2つずつ別個に設ける必要があ
る。
(7)発明の効果 以上のように、本発明によるインクジェット記会装置は
ヘッド内Oインクの流れが一方向化され、粒子化効率、
粒子化周波数及び階調性のすぐれた高性能のものである
。を喪、流れの一方向化を実現するのに圧電素子を用い
ているので、構造が簡単でコンパクトであり、実用性に
すぐれている。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. ゛1.インク供給路及びノズルの双方に通じる圧力室(
    圧電素子によって圧縮してインク粒子化を行うように構
    成され良印字ヘッド管有するインクジェット記録装置に
    おいて、圧力室のインク供給路側及びノズル側の位置に
    流量調整用圧電素子を設けたことを特徴とするインクジ
    ェット記録装置。
