Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a resin having excellent alkali and chemical resistance at high temperature useful for the separation by adsorbing heavy metal ions from sea water. CONSTITUTION:A 5-10% aqueous solution of NaOH is added to an ion exchange water in which a chelating group-containing phenol resin (end group H type) is immersed and a complex-formable metal ion such as Ca is adsorbed in the resin. The resulting phenol resin is reacted with NaOH and an etherating agent in water at approximately 20-150 deg.C in the pH of 7-14 to give a etherated phenol resin having chelating group. An etherating agent may be preferably halogenated acetic acid or halohydrin when the chelating group in the phenol resin is aminocarboxylic acid. APPLICATION:The separation by the adsorption of heavy metals from waste water of refuse incinerting plants, waste washing water of desulfurizers of stack gas, and aqueous salt solutions for sodium hydroxide.
