Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer having excellent film forming property suitable as an electro-deposition coating material, by copolymerizing acrylamide, acrylic ester and styrene in a water-miscible organic solvent, and cationizing the resulting copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: At least 20mol% (meth)acrylamide, at least 10mol% acrylic ester and at least 10mol% styrene or methacrylic ester are copolymerized in a water-miscible organic solvent (e.g. 1,4-dioxane). Subsequently the resulting copolymer is reacted with formaldehyde and an aliphatic secondary amine (e.g. dimethylamine or diethanolamine) to cationize the amido group in the copolymer as Mannich base, or to quaternize moreover the Mannich base. The obtained polymer is soluble in water and cationic.
