Abstract

PURPOSE: To safely perform replacing works of shells at upper part of converters in a short time, by replacing the old shell with a new one by using a balance type jig after cutting almost all parts of shell except refractory materials in the furnace.
CONSTITUTION: A converter 1 is vertically standed up and inside refractory materials deformed by thermal strains at an upper shell part 6 are removed. Then the shell part 6 is cut along its circumference part 8 leaving four short uncut parts 9. After the furnace body is inclined by 90°, a bracket 15 fitted to the front end of a balance type jig 13 fitted to a crane for molten iron is connected to a bracket resisting 16 installed to the inside of the upper shell 6 with a pin 17. Then the uncut parts 9 of the upper shell are cut and the cutt-off old upper shell 6 is carried out with the balance type jig 13 through operations of the crane. Then a new apper shell is fitted to the balance type jig 13 and carried to the converter. After the new aupper shell is temporarily fittd to the remaining part 7 of the shell, the converter is returned to the vertical position. After the new upper shell is correctly fitted to the remaining part of the shell 7, the fitted part is welded and the replacing work of converter shells is completed.
