Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance, in high yield, at low reaction temp., without producing by-products, by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of benzoic acid or nucleus-substd. benzoic acid using oxides of (a) Mo, (b) V, etc. and (c) Cu, etc. as catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The compd. of formula II and/or formula III is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of benzoic acid or nucleus-substd. benzoic acid of formulaI(R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H or methyl) at pref. 250W400°C in the presence of a catalyst comprising oxides of (a) Mo, (b) V, Nb and/or Ta and (c) Cu, Ag, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Pd and/or Pt. The catalyst may contain oxides of Tl or alkali or alkaline earth metal. Since the catalyst has high heat resistance, the trouble of hot-spot can be suppressed and the reaction can be easily controlled.
