Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize the deformation of a long steel material due to heat treatment by a method in which heating treatment is made on a long steel material kept under a condition that deformation is brought about in a direction opposite to the direction of deformation to be taken place when the material is subjected to a surface hardening treatment under nonrestraint condition.
CONSTITUTION: When a long steel material 1, e.g., rail, etc., is sent in longitudinal direction, moved at a moving rate of approx. 6mm/sec under nonrestraint condition by a heating coil 2 and a cooler 3, and then hardened for its hardening section 1a, a deformation of approx. 2.23mm/m length is brought about. Thus, the material 1 is received on two turnable support rollers 4 provided at an interval of approx. 300mm, and its central upside is flexed by a press roller 5 in such a way as to flex it approx. 0.7mm at the center of the support rollers 4. Under the condition, the material 1 is sent to the right at a moving rate of approx 6mm/ sec for heat treatment by a heating coil 2 and a cooler 3. Thus, the deformation rate of the material 1 becomes approx. 0.3mm/m.
