Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting carbon monoxide with water and an acrylic ester in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organophosphorus compound and a cobalt carbonyl compound.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon monoxide is reacted with water and an acrylic ester, e.g. methyle acrylate, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organophosphorus compound having one or more trivalent phosphorus atoms linked to an organic residue in the molecule, e.g. a triaklylphosphine, triarylphosphine or a phosphine compound having at least two phosphino groups substituted by aliphatic, aromatic groups, etc. such as 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane and a carbonyl compound, e.g. dicobalt octacarbonyl, to give the titled compound. The molar amount of the organophosphorus compound in the catalyst is preferably 0.2W0.6 times that of the cobalt atoms in the cobalt carbonyl compound.
