Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a highly active catalyst for reducing an α, β-unsaturated aldehyde by using a specific org. phosphorous compound and a cobalt carbonyl compound.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst for reducing an α, β-unsaturated aldehyde to a saturated aldehyde comprises an org. phosphorous compound such as 1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane or the like having two or more of trivalent phosphorus atoms connecting an org. residue such as an alkyl group, and aryl group or the like and a cobalt carbonyl compound such as dicobalt octacarbonyl or the like. This catalyst has high activity as well as increases a yield of a saturated aldehyde product.
