Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove trace of aldehydes existing in acrylic acid purified by conventional process, almost completely, by distilling the acrylic acid containing aldehydes as impurities in the presence of an α-amino acid such as DL-alanine.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic acid containing aldehydes as impurities is added with 0.5W5mol, pref. 1W3mol, beased on 1mol of the aldehyde, of an α-amino acid selected from DL-alanine, DL-methionine, DL-lysine, DL-aspartic acid, DL-glutamic acid and their salts. The mixture is heat-treated pref. at 50W100°C for 30W 120min, and distilled to obtain acrylic acid free from aldehyde. The trace of aldehyde in acrylic acid causes discoloration of acrylic acid, elongates the induction period of polymerization reaction, and gives the polymer having low molecular weight and high discoloration tendency.
