Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of the magnetic bearing, and to miniaturize the rotary electric machine by a method wherein the magnetic bearing and a mechanical bearing are mounted, the mechanical bearing is used when stopping and when turning the machine at low speed, and the magnetic bearing is excited and the mechanical bearing is removed when normally operating the machine. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic bearing 4 consisting of a stator 1, a rotor 2 and an exciting coil 3 is mounted to a shaft 5 while the mechanical bearing 7 such as a roller bearing is set up. The mechanical bearing 7 is detachably mounted previously by means of a bolt 10. When stopping the rotary electric machine and when turning it at low speed, the mechanical bearing 7 is operated, and the size of a gap G of the magnetic bearing 4 is held previously at value at the time of normal operation. When starting normal operation, the magnetic bearing 4 is excited while the mechanical bearing 7 is removed.
