Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the fatigue damage of the small end of a connecting rod which has bundles of fibers in the rod body between the small and large ends and is provided with light alloy as a matrix on the fibers, by gradually increasing the area of prescribed cross section of the small end of the connecting rod toward a prescribed direction.
CONSTITUTION: Two bundles of inorganic fibers F, which extend in one direction, are provided in a part of the small end 2 of a connecting rod and in its reinforcing ribs 4 which are provided on both the sides of the rod body 1 between the small end 2 and large end 3 so that the ribs extend in the axial direction. Aluminum alloy or the like is filled as a matrix M among the fibers F to reinforce the rod body 1 and the part of the small end 2 with the fibers F. The area A of the cross section of the small end 2, which extends toward the center line (a) of a wrist pin hole 5, is gradually increased toward the point (d) of connection of the rod body 1 with the small end 2 from th middle point (c) on a plane containing the center line (a) and perpendicularly intersecting the axis (b) of the rod body 1. As a result, the part of the small end 2, which carries compressive load, is reinforced not to suffer fatigue damage.
