Abstract

PURPOSE: To contrive to protect a fibrous filter from heat and prevent fibers from scattering, by a method wherein the parts of the fibrous filter on both inlet and outlet sides are covered with a ceramic body having a gas-permeable construction.
CONSTITUTION: The fibrous filter 2 composed of mineral fibers (e.g., silica wool) or metallic fibers entangled with each other is clampled between cordierite-based porous ceramic bodies 3 and is fitted into a holding part 1 through cordierite rings 4, to constitute the structure. An outside peripheral surface of the structure is held by a stainless steel wire mesh 12 and is fixed by ring stays 8, 11 which are spot welded to a cylindrical main body 7. An exhaust gas containing carbon particles is passed through the ceramic bodies 3 and the fibrous filter 2, by which the carbon particles are caught. After a predetermined amount of carbon particles is trapped, a small- type burner 20 and a glow plug 22 are operated and the carbon particles are cleaned by the heat of combustion.
