PURPOSE:To obtain an easy-to-use camera which maintains necessary and sufficient focusing accuracy by making the focusing recognition range at the focusing position detection in accordance with the forming state of an object image on a solid state image sensor freely selectable. CONSTITUTION:The electric signal corresponding to the three formed images of an object from an A/D converter to a solid-state image sensor such as CCD is inputted to a CPU, from which the recognition signal of front focus, focusing, and rear focus are generated by the comparison of respective signal levels, and the result thereof is displayed in a display device DISP. The addresses of the ROM of the CPU are selected according to the focal length, aperture F-number, etc. of an image pickup lens by switches 25, 27, by which the circuit constant of a focusing detecting circuit is changed and the focusing recognition range is freely selected without the influence of the change in object conditions. Hence, the camera with the easy-to-use focus detector meeting the user's will while maintaining necessary and sufficient focusing accuracy is obtained.
