Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a sizing agent capable of effectively preventing the fluffing of glass fiber over the all steps of the glass fiber manufacturing process, by adding an emulsion of a fatty acid glyceride having specific iodine value as a lubricant to a sizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A fatty acid glyceride emulsion having an iodine value of ≥40 is added as a lubricant to a sizing agent. The fatty acid glyceride having an iodine vaule of ≥40 is e.g. a simple or mixed glyceride composed mainly of unsaturated fatty acies such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, etc., palm oil, cottonseed oil, etc., esp. palm oil. More desirable results can be obtained by adding an epoxy silane, pref. the reaction product of an epoxy silane and hydrochloric acid, to the sizing agent containing palm oil emulsion. The epoxy silane is pref. γ-glycidoxypropyl trialkoxy silane or β-3,4-epoxycyclohexylethyl trialkoxy silane.
