Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sufficient volume-reducing effect and avoid troubles in carryint out the final disposal in future by compressing solid wastes such as paper, cloth and the like together with a binder.
CONSTITUTION: A material 20 to be treated consisting of solid wastes, particularly the miscellaneous solids generated at a nuclear power plant is placed in a drum 7 in an appropriate amount. Then, an appropriate amount of a previously melted thermoplastic binder, for example, a brazing filler is poured from a tank 13 into the drum 7, with the result that the brazing filler penetrates into gaps in the material 20. Further, a piston rod 9 is extended by opening a hydraulic cylinder 5 to compress the material 20 downwards by a compressing plate 11. When the compression is performed for an appropriate period of time, the molten brazing filler is solidified to bind together the minute pieces constituting the material 20. Accordingly, even after the plate 11 is removed, the material 20 does not expand and the volume thereof is maintained.
