CONSTITUTION: An alcohol is prepared by the hydration of an olefin using a catalyst obtained by substituting at least a part of the ion-exchangeable cation of a crystalline aluminosilicate of formula [X is 0.9±0.2; M is cation; n is 2/(ionic value of the cation); y is real number of 5W300; z is real number of 0W40] and exhibiting the X-ray diffraction pattern of table 1, etc. (e.g. ZSM-4 presented by Mobil Oil Co.), with ions of hydrogen, or element of the II-group or VIII-group of the periodic table or earth metal or rare earth metal. The alcohol can be prepared in extremely high conversion and selectivity without troubles inherent to the conventional processes.
