Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the titled derivative excellent in affinity for hair and skin, slecibility and moisture retention of films formed therefrom, by reacting dextran, a specified compound and a hydroxy-lower-alkylating agent. CONSTITUTION:Dextran of formulaI, wherein m>=1, is reacted with a compound of formula II, wherein R1-3 are lower alkyl, A is a group of formula III or IV and X is a halogen or a salt threrof, and a hydroxy-lower-alkylating agent, e.g., ethylene oxide, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst in an aqueous medium at 0-100 deg.C for 20min-24hr to obtain a cationized dextran derivative of formula V, wherein R is H, a hydroxy-lower-alkyl group, or a quat. ammonium nitrogen-containing group of formula VI, at least one is a quat. ammonium-containing group of formula VI and another on is a hydroxy-lower-alkyl, R<1> is H or a hydroxy-lower-alkyl group and n is 1-8,000.
