The beam of a laser beam source 1 is condensed onto a recording medium 5 by a half mirror 3 and an object lens 4. The intensity of the beam is so adjusted that information is recorded without deforming the layer 7 and damaging the metallic film 6. In case of reproducing, a weak beam is irradiated, and the reflection beam is detected through the half mirror 3 by a photodetector 2. In case of erasing, the intensity of the beam is so adjusted that the metallic film 6 is not damaged similarly.
