Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain smooth starting of a vehicle by constituting a speed change gear such that power is transmitted from an engine to a hydraulic pump by way of a fluid torque converter upon starting of the vehicle.
CONSTITUTION: Upon starting of a vehicle, an open/close valve 10 is first closed and a speed change operating lever 23 is set to a first position L. Since a spool valve 36 is thereupon held in a closed position, a hydraulic operating chamber 22 is opened to an oil tank 11' so that a piston 21 may not operate and hence a directly connected clutch D is in its open position. Then, if the rotational speed of an engine E is raised gradually, the rotary torque of a drive shaft 13 is transmitted to an input power shaft 1 of a hydraulic pump 2 at a rate of torque corresponding to an applied load by way of a fluid torque converter F. And, while the speed change operating lever 23 is shifted toward a second position T after start of the vehicle, the spool valve 36 of a control valve V is moved to its open position at a predetermined position of the speed change operating lever 23 to establish communication of an oil passage to bring the directly connected clutch D into a connected position so that the rotary torque of the drive shaft 13 is transmitted directly to the input power shaft 1.
