PURPOSE:To minimize heat generation in the inside of a copying machine, by constituting a device so that a detecting operation by a detecting means is not operated, in the course of a process operation by an image formation means, and the detecting operation by the detecting means is operated in the course of stand-by in case of non-operation of the process. CONSTITUTION:Since a COPY signal is ''0'' in the course of stand-by, an inverter Q34 outputs ''1''. Therefore, an AND gate Q33 generates an output in accordance with an output of an oscillator OSC, a transistor Q32 repeats its turn-on and turn- off, and drives a lamp LA intermittently. On the other hand, in the course of copying, lighting of the lamp is stopped by ''1'' of the signal COPY. In this way, since a toner detecting function is stopped repeatedly when copying is being executed, heat generation is minimized although a tungsten lamp LA is placed in the proximity of a developing device. Also, it is possible to prevent a detecting malfunction due to a pulse noise from a clutch, a solenoid, etc., which is apt to occur in the course of the copying operation.
