Abstract
PURPOSE: To make the startup of a metal halide lamp easy, by arranging a blowing mechanism equipped with heating mechanism adjacent to the metal halide lamp thereby blowing hot air around the outer circumferential surface of the illuminating tube at the startup of the lamp.
CONSTITUTION: The metal halide lamp 4 comprises the illuminating tube 5 in which a starting gas, mercury and a metal halide are sealed and which have an electrode 6 at each of the opposite ends that is connected to a respectve leading wire 9 through a metal foil 8. The metal halide lamp 4 is mounted in a hood 1 having an opening 2 in communication with a vacuum pump 3, and the blowing mechanism 12 is provided on the one side of the lamp 4, which blowing mechanism 12 comprises a body 13 containing a fan and a blowing duct 14 equipped with a heater 15. When it is required to startup the lamp 4, the body 13 is started, an electric current is passed to the heater 15, and after the tube wall temperature of the illuminating tube 5 has been heated to 40W70°C by blowing hot air to the outer circumferential surface of the illuminating tube 5 from the duct 14, an electric current is passed to a mercury lamp stabilizer 10 connected to a power source 11 to light the lamp 4, and then the electric supply to the heater 15 is stopped and cooling air is blown to the outer circumferential surface of the illuminating tube 5.
