PURPOSE:To make the strip velocity perfectly coincide with the pinch rolls's reference velocity signal, by detecting the pinch roll's electric current, and correcting and changing the pinch roll's reference velocity signal so as to make this electric current null. CONSTITUTION:When the pinch roll's reference velocity signal 4 is larger than the actual strip velocity, a pinch roll 8 makes a motoring, so that an electric current detector 10 detects the electric current on the plus (+) side, the forward slip 2 is corrected to a smaller value by a forward slip correcting circuit 11, and the pinch roll's reference velocity signal 4 is decreased. When the pinch roll's reference velocity signal 4 is smaller than the actual strip velocity, the pinch roll 8 makes a dragging, so that the electric current detector 10 detects the electric current on the minus (-) side. The forward slip 2 is corrected to a larger value by the forward slip correcting circuit 11, and the pinch roll's reference velocity signal 4 is increased. By the present method, the pinch roll's electric current is always controlled so as to be null, so that the actual strip velocity coincides with the pinch roll's reference velocity signal.
