Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive, high-performance polarizing, separating and synthesizing dvice by forming and cementing polarizing filters on the flanks of a couple of symmetric electrooptic crystals, by mirror-finishing two flanks facing to the cemented surface, and by providing electrodes on both upper and lower surfaces. CONSTITUTION:On one flank 2 of an electrooptic crystal 1 of lithium niobate, a polarizing filter layer made of a dielectric multilayered film is formed. This crystal 1 is cemented to another cyrstal having the same structure to from a hexagonal body. On a flank 3, a mirror surface of a dielectric single-layered or multilayered film is provided and electrodes 7 are provided on upper and lower surfaces perpendicular to the mirror surface. Incident light enters the crystal 1 from an incidence surface 4; S-polarized light is reflected by a polarizing filter surface 2, and P-polarized light is transmitted. The separated S wave and P wave are reflected by the flank 3 and synthesized through the polarizing filter surface 2 to be emitted from a surface 5. While a voltage is applied to the electrodes 7, the S- and P-polarized waves are converted mutually and the resulting synthesized light is emitted from a surface 6. Consequently, an inexpensive, high-performance polarizing, separating and synthesizing device is obtained.
