Abstract

PURPOSE:To vary the value of costraint force of a developer to a developer carrier within optional range, by supplying an alternating magnetic field from the outside of an electrostatic image holder and the developer carrier to a development gap. CONSTITUTION:An electrostatic image holder 5 having an electrostatic image on the surface is a rotary drum and has a photosensitive layer on the circumferential surface. A developer carrier 6 carrying a developer layer 7 on the surface contains a permanent magnet 8 and is covered with a cylindrical nonmagnetic sleeve 9. The electrostatic holder 5 and developer carrier 6 turn in the same direction and at an equal speed, and a magnetic blade 11 close to insulating magnetic toner 10 forming the developer layer and the developer carrier 6 restricts the toner 10 to desired coating thickness. Consequently, the toner 10 is attracted strongly by the permanent magnet 8 in the developer carrier 6 and at a tuft part, the mutual magnetic attracting force of the toner 10 increases to make it hard for the toner 10 to jump over a development gap 13. For this purpose, an alternating magnetic field is established in the development gap 13 to apply AC pulses to coil windings 16-, thus enabling the toner to jump over the gap 13 easily.
