Abstract

PURPOSE:To make long the life of light emitting elemets, by controlling an optical output of the light emitting elements according to the loss, in a bidirectional communication system. CONSTITUTION:An optical level incident to a photo detector 6 is discriminated for more or less than an arbitrary optical level by a reception level discrimination circuit 20. The discriminated output is synthesized into a main signal at a light emitting element drive circuit 12 and transmitted to an optical transmission line 14 at a light emitting element 13. The transmitted signal is converted into an electric signal at a photo detector 15 and amplified at an amplifier 16. A discriminating signal synthesized and transmitted to the main signal is detected at a discrimination signal detection circuit 21 from the signal. This discrimination signal controls a light emitting element drive circuit 3, allowing to control so that an optical level incident to the photo detector 6 can be constant by the output of the detector 4. This is the same for the method controlling the light emitting element 13 so that the optical level incident to the photodetector can be constant. Thus, the light emitting output of the light emitting element can remarkably be reduced and life of the light emitting element can be extended.
