Abstract

PURPOSE:Cosmetic an external preparation that contain an ester from a methylsteroid bearing 2 methyl groups on the 4-position in the sterol skelton and an alpha- branched carboxylic acid, thus having high hydrolysis resistance and water retention and causing no irritation on the skin. CONSTITUTION:The objective cosmetic and external preparation contains an ester from a methylsteroid bearing 2 methyl groups on the 4-position in the sterol skelton such as dihydrolanosterol and an alpha-branched carboxylic acid of the formula (R1 is alkyl of 2 or more carbon atoms; R2 is alkyl of 4 or more carbon atoms) such as alpha-ethylhexanoic acid. The above ester has high resistance to hydrolysis (for example, substantially inert to 1N KOH in n-propanol). Since it has good water retention, the emulsification is readily effected and the resulting emulsion is stable. Therefore, surfactant used can be reduced to a very small amount to give a base maerial causing no irritation on the skin. The esterification is conducted by heating them in the presence of a catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid.
