Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain simply constructed and small-sized sodium leakage detection apparatus, by using an optical fiber which is chemically eroded by sodium and is lowered the transmission efficiency of the light. CONSTITUTION:A piping 1 is surrounded by a cover 3 at a definite section detecting a leakage of sodium and an optical fiber 4 composed of a material easy to erode chemically is set up at the inside of the cover 3. Light from a light source 7 is transmitted to the fiber 4 for sodium leakage detection through an optical fiber 8 and an optical fiber cable 6. On occasion of not leaking sodium, the light emitted from the source 7 is nearly transmitted to a photodetector 11 because of no optical loss in the optical fiber 4. But, on occasion of leaking sodium, the fiber 4 is chemically eroded by sodium or sodium hydroxide produced by combining with moisture in the atmosphere and the light is leaked. Then, the transmission efficiency of the light is lowered and detection output becomes small. An output signal (a) of the detector 11 is compared with a set value b at a discrimination part 12 and presence or absence of the leakage is decided.
