Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the accurate detection of the weld defects of a titled structure possible by an ultrasonic flaw detection method by projecting the end parts of both members to be joined outward in parallel and proximity, butt welding the projecting ends, and recessing beads from the surfaces of base metals.
CONSTITUTION: Joining end parts of a body 10 which is a vessel or piping are projected outward in proximity to each other, whereby projecting parts (flanges) 1, 1 are formed, and the projecting ends thereof are welded. The surfaces of beads 11 are made flush to the surface of base metals or are recessed therefrom. Then, it is possible to make ultrasonic flaw detection of the entire area of the weld zone with both side surfaces 19, 19 of the flanges 1, 1 as flaw detection areas. Namely the parts to be detected are immersed into a water tank 13, and a flaw detecting head 6 is placed on the side surface 19 and is moved in an arrow direction. The output signal by scanning from the ultrasonic flaw detector is processed to MA scopes by a digital processing oscilloscope 8 and is outputted to a printer 12 via a computer 9. Weld defects are detected by the MA scopes obtained in this way.
