Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce metallic ions to a metal and to deposit it on a platinum electrode in a emtallic state, by partitioning a redox solution tank provided with a n type semi-conductor electrode and a metallic ions-containing liquid tank provided with a platinum electrode with an ion exchange membrane and by connecting the both electrodes before irradiating solar rays to the semi-conductor electrode.
CONSTITUTION: A photoelectrolytic cell is divided into two tanks by an ion exchange membrane or an unglazed pottery. An n type semi-conductor 1 is dipped as an electrode into a redox solution 6 in one tank. A solution 4 containing Ag, Au, Pt or other noble metal as ions is put into the other tank and an opposite electrode 3 made of a material inactive to an electrodic reaction such as Pt or graphite is dipped into the solution 4. The both electrodes 1, 3 are connected by a conductor 2. In this state, solar rays are irradiated to the semi-conductor electrode 1 to generate photoelectrons, which flow through the conductor 2 to the opposite electrode 3. Thus an electolytic reaction occurs and metallic ions in the lolution 4 are reduced through the boundary of the electrode 3 to a high-purity metal. Therefore refining of a metal can e carried out using free solar energy.
