Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable the use of nonpurified raw salt having a large content of Ca ions, by keeping the concentration of NaOH in a cathodic chamber at a prescribed value when preparing Cl for sterilizing water by electrolyzing brine by an ion exchange membrane method.
CONSTITUTION: Cl or NaClO To be used for sterilizing city water and sewage is prepared with a small scale NaCl water electrolytic cell employing an cation exchange membrane method that is installed in the vicinity of the water sterilizing unit. In this process, an anode 3 is arranged in an anodic chamber 3' partitioned by the cation exchange membrane 2 in the electrolytic cell 1, and saturated brine obtained by putting non purified raw salt 8 and water 9 into a saturation tank 7 and by adjusting the concentration of Ca ions at a value of 1,000ppm or less is fed to the anodic chamber 3'. Water electrolysis is carried out by further adding water 12 to a cathodic chamber 4' equipped with a cathode 4 and by adjusting the concentration of NaOH formed at a value of 1W60g/l. Cl formed in the anodic chamber 3 is partly used for sterilization as it is and is partly led to a chamber 6 together with an NaOH liquid formed to form NaOCl, which is used for water sterilization. In this process, the ion exchange membrane 2 can be used for a long time without being clogged with hardly soluble Ca salts.
