Abstract

PURPOSE: When caustic alkali and halogen are produced from alkali metal halide, a thermochemical process is utilized, but not an electrolytic process, to increase the utilization effeciency of energy necessary for the production.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali metal halide is made to react with nitrogen dioxide at 150W350°C to form an alkali nitrite and a halogen and the alkali nitrite is made to react with iron (III) oxide at temperatue higher than 500°C to form an alkali ferrate and nitrogen dioxide. :The resultant nitrogen dioxide is recycled and used in the first reaction. The alkali ferrate is made to react with water at temperture higher than 40°C to effect hydrolysis into the objective caustic alkali and iron (III) oxide. The caustic alkali is obtained in the process and the halogen is in the first process using chemical reactions utilizing thermal energy, but not by electrolysis, which use electric energy obtained from thermal energy. Therefore, this process is higher efficient than the electrolysis in terms of energy.
