Abstract

PURPOSE: In the recovery of ammonia from an aqueous ammonium chloride containing bicarbonate ion by use of a primary amine, an inert gas is introduced into the reaction system to increase the decomposition rate of ammonium chloride.
CONSTITUTION: A primary amine that forms a separate phase from the sodium chloride and an ammonium chloride aqueous solution containing bicarbonate ion such as octadecylamine, which may be combined with an organic solvent as a diluent that can form two layers with water, is added to the ammonium chloride aqueous solution such as the mother liquer after separation of sodium bicarbonate by precipitation from the reaction mixture of the Solvay process and an inert gas such as air and/or carbon dioxide gas are blown into the mixture under stirring to decompose ammonium chloride according to the reaction shown by the equation to form ammonia. Then, the reaction mixture is stood to separate into two phases and the aqueous layer is fed to the carbonation column in the Solvay process as the ammoniacal brine, the organic layer is regenerated by adding slaked lime.
