Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable realization of an equalized illuminance distribution in an illumination field without using any illumination equipment, by applying the high-frequency voltage to electrodes provided on the flat and wide side walls of a bulb, which are located opposite to one another, so as to initiate the discharge of a lamp. CONSTITUTION:A flat rectangular parallelopiped discharge lamp bulb 1 made of glass is charged with either mercury or a rare gas, after the pressure within the bulb 1 is diminished. Side surfaces 1a and 1b, that have a large area and are located opposite to one another, are provided with netlike electrodes 2a and 2b made of a transparent conductive material such as tin oxide. A high-frequency generator 3 is attached to the bottom surface of the bulb 1, and the output terminals of the generator 3 are connected to the electrodes 2a and 2b, respectively. Application of high frequenies to the electrodes 2a and 2b initiates the discharge of an electric discharge lamp, which is stably and equally diffused in the bulb 1. Owing to the above constitution, the lamp can work as a plane light source having constant luminance as well as good luminous efficacy over a wide area. Consequently, equalized illuminance distribution of the lamp can be realized without using any other illumination equipment.
