Abstract

PURPOSE:To form an oriented film simply and efficiently by impregnating a soln. of an orienting agent into an elastic porous material having the same shape as a part of the surface of an electrode substrate contacing with a liq. crystal and by pressing the material on the substrate surface to stick the soln. CONSTITUTION:A soln. of an orienting agent is impregnated into an elastic porous material 3 having the almost same plane shape as a part A of an electrode substrate 1 contacting with a liq. crystal. The material 3 is set opposite to the part A of the substrate 1 for a liq. crystal display cell after forming an electrode 2 for display and a lead section 2a on the surface of the substrate 1, and by pressing a backing plate 4, the material 3 is compressed to allow the soln. to ooze and stick it to the surface of the substrate 1, thereby forming a cost 5 of the soln. The coat 5 is then solidified by calcination to form an oriented film.
