NEW MATERIAL:An ester of chlorophyll with sucrose or raffinose.
USE: Water-soluble chlorophyll, characterized by solubilizing the water-insoluble chlorophyll in water by the esterification, useful as a medicine, particularly an injection, and having both water-solubility and oil-solubility due to the phytol part remaining as it is in the molecule exhibiting the lipophilic property and the exchange of the methyl ester part with the sugar.
PROCESS: Chlorophyll is reacted with sucrose or raffinose to exchange only the methyl group in the methyl ester part of the chlorophyll with the sucrose or raffinose and give the aimed sugar derivative of the chlorophyll. The reaction is carried out in a solvent, e.g. N,N-dimethylacetamide, under heating.
