Abstract
PURPOSE: To stabilize welding arcs by reducing or negating the magnetism existing in bevelings with a vertical magnetic field.
CONSTITUTION: To prevent deflections to arc pillars, an exciting coil 5 is positioned around a welding torch 3 so that the coil will encircle the torch 3, and then, a vertical magnetic field is applied. It is necessary to make the diameter of coil 5 wider than the width of the beveling. When the S-pole is applied by coil 5, both N-pole and S-pole are already existing at the both sides of beveling portion 2, respectively, and a magnetic field crossing the beveling is already being produced before applying the vertical magnetic field. Therefore, when the vetical magnetic field is applied, a magnetic field of a constant intensity is produced throughout the coil 5, and the parent metal near the beveling is magnetized. Consequently, the magnetic field at the lefthand side of the diagram becomes N+S and negatives each other, but the magnetic field at the righthand side becomes S+S and is strengthened. In this way, the magnetic fields at the lefthand side and righthand side of the bevelling 2, respectively, have different intensities and the magnetic field crossing the beveling is weakened, and thus the arcs are stabilized.
