Abstract

PURPOSE:To strictly control the refractive index and to manufacture an optical fiber with low loss in a wide zone by detecting the distance between a glass tube and a heating source and heating the tube while conducting control so as to keep the distance uniform. CONSTITUTION:A glass tube 1 is heated with a burner 4, and gaseous hydrogen and gaseous oxygen are fed into the burner 4 while setting the flow rates with a mass flow controller 8 so as to keep a flame uniform. The flame composed of an inner flame 2 and an outer flame 3 is regulated so that the highest temp. part of the flame contacts with the tube 1. The temp. of the heated part of the tube 1 is measured with an optical pyrometer 6, it is fed back to a table 5 fixing the burner 4, and the distance between the burner 4 and the tube 1 is controlled so as to attain a prescribed temp. For example, when the burner 4 is moved 50 times in the longitudinal direction of the tube 1 by this method, and the diameter of the tube 1 is reduced from 20mm. to 16mm., the temp. change is + or -5 deg.C.
