Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a base material for an optical fiber, which is long and low in a loss, by making boron alcoxide permeate onto both parallel side surfaces of a base material for a porous glass optical fiber, which has been manufactured by a vapor phase axis attaching method, and forming a porous glass area containing B2O3. CONSTITUTION:On both parallel side surfaces 14 of a porous glass base material 11 having a core 12 and a clad 13, which has been manufactured by a vapor phase axis attaching method is applied or sprayed liquid boron alcooxide, and boron alcoxide is converted to B2O3 by exposing this base material 11 to vapor.
