PURPOSE:To prevent the flow of gases to soaking chamber side and prevent a thermal energy loss by providing sealing means using two ducts which inject shielding gases and suck these in the inlet position of a cooling chamber juxtaposed with a heating chamber. CONSTITUTION:In annealing or the like of a metallic strip 8, a shielding gas is blown through a nozzle 24 toward the strip 8 from the 1st duct 23 at the inlet of a cooler 15 in succession to a soaking chamber 5. Thence, this gas is sucked through a nozzle 26 to the 2nd duct 24. The furnace pressure of the cooling chamber is kept high by these sealing means and even if the cooling gases blown from plenum chambers 18a, 18b try to flow to soaking chamber 5 side, the inflow thereof is blocked. AT this time, the gas is blown toward the moving track of the strip 8 from the nozzle 24 of the 1st duct 23 over a wider range than the width direction of the strip 8 in a through-hole 7.
